In 1950 C.J. “Pappy” Hart joined Creighton Hunter and Frank Stillwell in transforming an Orange County airfield into what is widely recognized as America’s first commercial drag strip. A racer, promoter and visionary, Hart believed hot rodders needed a safe place to race, helping turn a growing Southern California pastime into an organized sport. During Santa Ana Drags’ nine-year run, thousands of racers tested their machines on the quarter-mile, laying the groundwork for modern drag racing. The artwork featured in this design traces its roots back to an original sketch created by Hart himself, capturing the spirit of the track he helped build and the movement he helped launch. More than 70 years later, Santa Ana Drags remains a symbol of the ingenuity, competition and speed that defined hot rodding’s golden age.
